UPS Technologies
Knowing what UPS technologies are available allows you to make an informed decision about which type of UPS is best for your application. As well as a multitude of sizes Eaton manufactures UPS that use a number of different technologies:
Offline

Offline UPS are the entry level for battery back up. In the event of power failure the UPS switches over to the battery circuit in order to power the attached device.
- Ideal for protecting individual PC’s in work space
- Single phase units provide basic protection from:
- Power failure
- Power sag
- Power surge
Line interactive

Line interactive UPS provide more protection that offline (although for a higher price). They work by switching over to battery power once the power drops to a certain level
- Ideal for protecting networking equipment & small servers
- Single phase units provide protection from:
- Power failure
- Power sag
- Power surge
- Under voltage
- Over voltage
Online double conversion

Online UPS provide the highest level of protection to equipment, they work by passing all power through the battery, this means that all power has been converted from AC to DC and then back from DC to AC giving the highest power quality available. In the event of power failure the battery continues to supply the power with no switch over time.
- Ideal for protecting large servers and critical systems
- Single and 3 phase units protect from:
- Power failure
- Power sag
- Power surge
- Under voltage
- Over voltage
- Switching transient
- Line noise
- Frequency variation
- Harmonic distortion
